This week, I’m excited to be bringing you the latest instalment of my Small Business Interview series. For this edition, I was thrilled to pick the brain of talented photographer and brand image specialist, Claire Watson.
Claire is based in Edinburgh, and after twenty years of developing her skills as a photographer, she turned professional in 2012. After nearly a decade of running her own small business, I was really excited to hear what she had to say!
From her photography training for business owners, to her lockdown photography club, Claire pours her passion for people into everything she does. If you are based in the Lothian area and in need of a brand image advisor, get in touch today.
For now though, let’s get into some quick fire questions!
Why do you do what you do?
I like meeting people and hearing their stories. And if I can, making them feel better about getting their picture taken.
What are you most proud of?
In business, I’m probably most proud of my reputation. People are confident in referring business to me and enjoy working with me.
What keeps you up at night?
Nothing! I follow Gin Lalli’s advice on caffeine, and a good night time routine, so I generally sleep well. I get a bit stressed about money and when I’m really busy getting edits through to clients.
What was the best business decision you ever made?
To focus on the people.
And the worst?
You need to pay for advertising in magazines.
What’s the best piece of advice you ever got?
I remember reading somewhere about how pointless perfectionism is. It doesn’t exist, everything can always be improved, so you have to know when to pull the trigger. I still struggle with just taking action and not over thinking, but work in progress. Such is life.
How do you attract new clients or customers?
Talking to people, online, networking, face-to-face when allowed.
What do you enjoy most about your marketing?
Talking to you, Denise, about what I should be doing!
How do you relax?
Read books, lift weights, learn new things, walk in the woods, yoga, meditate, cook food… many things.
What is your favourite brand?
I like brands that have clear values that align with mine and that they stick to. Social, environmental, inclusive, etc. That view of business as something that is beyond profit. Currently, Neatebox and Patagonia come to mind.
What’s something you dream of doing?
At the moment, going to see my niece and nephew in NZ, but after that changing the world ;)
Setting up a social enterprise working on preventative strategies for mental health and inactivity in primary schools.
